It was a lot of fun to see Cass reenter the world of the living towards the end of the book and her descriptions of Prom were absolutely hysterical! Tim is a good counterbalance to Cass’s character. At least Cass doesn’t need to be worried about being picked on in high school, however, as everyone is too terrified of her and what she knows. Her dead sister, Paige, hangs out in her room all of the time and her best friends at school are a couple of ghosts who have been dead for decades. Megan Crewe does an excellent job showing the reader how important good friends are and how critical it is to be thoughtful of others so that you can help them during the low points in their life and, hopefully, they will do the same for you!Ĭass is sarcastic, bitter and has a huge chip on her shoulder. Cass gets a little scared in the book about how close she is getting to Tim and tries to push him away with fairly disastrous results. This is often the worst thing that you can do as most teens want to share what they are feeling and how their life has changed – especially with those whom they consider their close friends. Friends don’t know what to say or do so they leave you alone or try to avoid the subject. Cass lost her sister and Tim lost his mother. Then Cass’s older sister, Paige, died and Cass had a whole other set of problems to deal with! Granted, most teens don’t see ghosts, but it is difficult to lose a loved one, as is shown by both Cass and Tim in this book. Cass did her best to make it up to her friend, but was not able to give up enough or apologize enough to become friends with her again. Cass had a best friend all growing up until one day her supposed BFF, jealous that Cass won a position on the debate team that she wanted, turned the whole school against her. I thought Cass was a very realistic heroine who is struggling with issues that many teens have difficulty with. I love a good ghost story so I gravitated to this book right away when I saw it on the shelf.

Maybe she should give the living another chance – and then things get complicated… But as Cass spends more and more time with Tim, she comes to realize that Tim isn’t so bad. Now Cass has to try to help Tim find the ghost of his mother to get the dirt on her ex-best friend who ruined Cass’s life. Everything is going fine until Tim, vice president of the student council, uncovers her secret. And they know everyone’s secrets! If she can’t befriend anyone in high school, Cass can make their lives miserable by revealing their hidden secrets. Cass knows that, compared to “breathers,” ghosts are uncomplicated and reliable. She can see ghosts ever since her older sister died a few years ago. Cass McKenna doesn’t have any friends, any live ones that is.
